Our childcare center reflects more of a learning center, with the dedication to help children learn through play. Children are encouraged to be hands on and explore their intellectual curiosity. You can see this in the rooms, where children choose materials and teachers join in rather than direct from the front. Ask to watch a stretch of the day during your tour.
In a play-based room, children move between areas through the day: blocks, books, art, pretend play, water or sand. A teacher kneels at eye level, asks what a child is building, and adds a word or a question. Circle time is short for infants and toddlers and longer for Pre-K. You can expect to see children choosing, talking, and trying things out, not sitting in rows.
Play is how young children practice the skills you notice later at home. Stacking cups becomes counting and balance. Pouring water becomes patience and clean-up. Pretend play becomes sharing words with a sibling. When a child picks a task, finishes it, and tells you about it, that is the thinking you want to see, and it starts with hands-on play at school.
